The word "shampoo" is derived from the Hindu word for massage, "champoo." Surprisingly, shampoo, in the modern sense, did not come into existence until the nineteenth century. Before then, body soap was used to clean hair. During the 1800s, English hairdressers indulged their patrons with various techniques of hairwashing and scalp massage. To avoid the scummy residue that soap left on the hair, they mixed citrus juice, potash, and scents into the hair-washing solutions. However, it was not until the Germans introduced the first commercial shampoos in the 1890s that residue-free shampoo came into wide-scale European use. A few years later, American John Breck developed his own shampoo formulation in this country to combat the onset of baldness. He lost his hair, but gained a shampoo company.
