THE GOLD STANDARD

Eye Catching Title
Nearly everyone is aware of the fact that quality gold jewelry comes with a "karat" designation. Pure 24K gold jewelry is rare because this precious metal is so soft in its purest form. More common is jewelry in the 10K to 18K range. The higher the karat rating, the more gold is mixed with a base element. Other than that, gold can carry designations which are not as clearly perceived by the public. For instance, there is "gold filled" (or "gold overlay") jewelry, which are pieces with a thin layer of gold bonded to a base metal. In addition, there are "gold electroplated" items, which carry an even thinner layer of gold on their outer surfaces. These pieces need only conform to a requirement that the layer of gold be at least seven millionths of an inch thick. Less than that, the jewelry is known as "gold wash."
