One in twenty preschool children has a vision problem. Yet, according to the vision organization Prevent Blindness America, about two out of three children in the United States do not receive critical eye services before they reach the age of six years. Because vision plays an important role in learning, eye disorders can exert an adverse impact on future school performance. For this reason, children should undergo a certified vision screening or eye exam to detect any serious vision problems. With this in mind, children should have their vision checked at infancy, then again at six months, three years, and five years, with follow- ups as needed. Many children's vision problems can be successfully treated if detected early.
