RECOVERING FROM HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Eye Catching Title
By paying proper attention to the rehabilitative process, physical therapists have been able to significantly reduce recovery times among hip replacement patients. According to the Lahey Clinic, the average hip-arthroplasty patient underwent a 17-day hospital stay ten years ago. In 1990, time spent in the hospital was only nine days. Last year, it was six to seven days. What makes the reduced recovery time possible is the introduction of physical therapy exercises as soon as the day after surgery. Hip replacement patients begin by using a walker and by engaging in active exercises to build strength. One week after surgery, patients can walk on crutches and continue endurance and strength exercises. With ongoing physical therapy, crutches can be discarded about six weeks after surgery.
