Women with heart conditions who plan to become pregnant should be aware that pregnancy causes changes in the heart and blood vessels that stress the body and increase the heart's workload. For instance, blood volume increases 40- 50% during the first trimester and remains elevated throughout the pregnancy. The amount of blood pumped by the heart also increases 30-40% due to the increased blood volume. Blood pressure often decreases due to hormonal changes or redirection of blood to the fetus. These changes are normal and natural in that they help ensure that the growing fetus will get needed oxygen and nutrients. However, women with heart conditions should discuss their condition and its potential implications with their doctors prior to planning for pregnancy. |
