Unlike its more austere and astringent relative, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc is a much more approachable, light and fruity red wine. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc is one of the five grapes that are blended into the red wines of Bordeaux. As a varietal, Cabernet Franc, on its own, is distinguished by lighter coloring, less tannin content, and softer acidity than Cabernet Sauvignon, along with generous fruit aromas and peppery flavors. This creates a leaner, fresher style of Cabernet that is best drunk young. It pairs wonderfully with strong cheeses and tomato-based dishes, as well as white meats and Mediterranean fare. Cabernet Franc is an excellent choice of wine to go with pizza. |
